Who it’s for

Is this for me?

IOP is for adults 18 and over who need more support than one therapy hour a week. You don’t need a diagnosis to ask.

  • Depression that's making work, school or home hard to keep up with
  • Anxiety or panic that one hour a week isn't touching
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • A life crisis that has knocked everything off balance
  • A mood disorder that needs more than a weekly check-in

If you’re thinking about suicide or don’t feel safe tonight, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency room. They can help right now. We’ll be here when you’re ready.

Is IOP right for me?

Five quick questions. This is not a diagnosis; it’s a quick way to see whether a screening call makes sense.

Your answers stay on your phone.

The shape of a 3-hour day

Every day runs in the same order, so you always know what comes next.

  1. Check-in

A short round where everyone says how the last couple of days went.

  2. Process group

Talk through what's going on in your life right now. The group helps you think it through.

  3. Break

Stretch, grab some water, take a breather.

  4. Skills group

Learn this week's skill and practice it before you leave.

  5. Closing

Pick one thing to try before next time. Then head home.

Also part of the program
  • A one-on-one session with your therapist every week
  • A psychiatric evaluation in week 1
  • Medication visits every 2 weeks
  • One session with a family member or support person
The skills

What the 8 weeks look like

Each week has one skills theme. The themes run in a loop, so you can join in any week. Eight weeks takes you all the way around.

  1. Week1Safety and stabilization
  2. Week2Understanding the problem (CBT)
  3. Week3Regulating emotion (DBT)
  4. Week4Tolerating distress (DBT)
  5. Week5The body and trauma
  6. Week6Relationships and boundaries
  7. Week7Values and the next chapter
  8. Week8Relapse prevention and step-down

After week 8 the loop starts again at week 1. CBT is cognitive behavioral therapy. DBT is dialectical behavior therapy.

Your team

Who you’ll work with

The same people every week, so you don’t have to tell your story over and over.

Your therapist

The same therapist for your one-on-one session, every week you're in the program.

A psychiatric nurse practitioner

You see our psychiatric nurse practitioner for an evaluation in week 1, then for medication visits every 2 weeks.

Supervised clinical interns

A licensed clinician directs the program, and supervised clinical interns co-lead the groups. Interns mean more hands in the room and more attention for you, not less.

Someone you choose

One session with a family member or support person, so they know what you're working on and how to help.

Progress

How we know it’s working

Every 2 weeks, you fill out three short questionnaires. You and your therapist look at the scores together, so you can both see what’s changing.

What a large study of IOPs found

47.7%

of adults showed reliable improvement in depression, measured with the PHQ-9.

45.9%

showed reliable improvement in anxiety, measured with the GAD-7.

Reliable improvement means a score changed by more than the normal ups and downs of the questionnaire. These figures come from another program, not ours. We’ll publish PATH’s own outcomes once 20 people have completed the program.

Source: University of Minnesota research brief, 2025. 7,107 adults in an intensive outpatient program.

Questions

Five questions we get about IOP

Can I keep working?

Yes. The evening track runs 5:30pm to 8:30pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, after most workdays end. If mornings work better, the day track runs 9:00am to 12:00pm.

Do I have to talk in group?

No. You can listen for as long as you need.

What if I miss a day?

If you miss a day, we call you that day. If you call us the same day, you keep that day — package holders make it up within their 12 weeks. Two missed days in a week means we sit down together and look at the plan.

Can I do it by video?

The IOP is in person at our Tempe office. Your weekly one-on-one session can be by video.

What happens after I finish?

You leave with a relapse-prevention plan and your next PATH appointment already booked, so there's no gap between IOP and what comes next.

If you need help right now

PATH does not provide emergency or after-hours crisis care.
